8/30/2005 07:31:00 PM|W|P|Steve Geluso|W|P|School is cool. Especially this year. There is not a class that I don't love so far. All of my teachers are great and I've got pretty good company in all my classes too. I got seats next to Crawford and Justin Engel in Chemistry so we all expect to bring back Coin Wars real soon. Coin wars is the best. We made it up in an 8th grade math class that we all had together. Basically, you bring in all sorts of pocket change, color the change different colors for each person, set it all on a desk and take turns flicking the coins around until only one player has pieces still on the table. It's the coolest game ever! After AP Chemistry I went down the hall to Photography. The class was totally packed and six people ended up having to go downstairs and grab more chairs. They didn't need to all go and get chairs because there were three in the back near me, but I guess no one heard us trying to tell them that. Mr. Murphy was a funny guy and just talked to us for the whole hour. Leadership was great too. We all sat around and patted ourselves on the back for doing such a great job with the freshman at their orientation this Monday. After much deliberation, the decision was made to make the class a graded class, as opposed to a pass/fail class, and that part of our grade would be determined based on journal entries at the end of every day. I was super excited for that because it sounded like writing a real-world blog. That brings my current blog count up to four. I whipped my scooter out of my locker and headed to good old Albertson's for lunch. On the way down the small hill by mac hall going to the basketball courts, I thought it would be funny to ride my scooter and crash over this little bump on purpose. The crash ended up being a bit more extreme than I had planned and lots of people laughed at me. Two younger students even came up and asked me if I was ok. I felt totally cool. When we finally got to Albertson's, Crawford and I bought marshmallows for our locker and split a quickly-made french bread and turkey sandwich. Andy and I headed to math together right after lunch. We both had a good time with Mrs. DeBuigne in her computer science class last year and are looking forward to another great class with her this year. When I was sitting in class, sort of not getting started on my homework, I came up with a great idea for the school. I don't want to spoil it now but, if it gets done, it will be pretty darn cool and happen soon. I'll present the idea in leadership class tomorrow and see how bad it gets shot down. The most interesting class of the day was Sociology. I got to class with hardly a minute to spare before being tardy and expected a struggle to find a desk. Instead, there were only about 8 other guys chilling in the room talking about how they couldn't believe there were only 14 people signed up for the class. Some girls strolled in and we were all very excited. We sat up straight in our seats, put on our best "cool" smiles and started talking about hott sophisticated stuff. Mr. Wall seems to be a really awesome teacher and everyone is excited that we'll be able to have good class conversations with him because of the low number of students in the class. The day ended with Language Arts with Mr. Neid. He's just about the coolest guy ever. As he called attendance he asked each person how they were doing or things about their day. Whenever people would give him short, one-word answers he pressed more and asked more involved questions like what about their day made them feel good now. Someone asked if he actually cared about how we were doing and he said that was the point, he actually did. It was cool to see a teacher like that. Another great thing happened in his class too, but this isn't really the place to be bragging about my captivating women skills. After school I saw Brandon in the halls talking to the crew after his one and only class at Richland this year. He's cool and decided to do running start this year so he gets to skip out on having a lot of classes at school like that. He doesn't even have to start school until mid-September or something. I am totally jealous. At cross country practice I ran. Also, Red Wolf says:
"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. Show a man how to use the internet and he'll leave you alone for two months."

Zach Braff, scrubsalicious.
After having a men's night with Chad and Tyler where we stayed up all night watching the first season of Scrubs on DVD, I have fallen back in love with Zach Braff. I ran across a blog that he writes to promote Garden State. I have only read a few posts but they are great. He is a great man. Here are his new years resolutions:
"-Forgo all exercise (including walking), -Learn to smoke (something thin like Capri's), -Take my loved one's for granted, -Stop washing my hands after twosies, -Laugh at babies who are late walkers, -Pull leaves off trees that appear to be flourishing, -Name the yet to be named voices in my head (something tough like Carl or Kyle) -Be less kind to bunnies, -Floss everything but my teeth, -Travel (but only around my yard and with a light carry-on) -Stop and smell the Rosens. (They're a wonderful family and absolutely compulsive about showering.)"
HAHAHA! He is just too funny. In another post, he was telling people not to argue and be mean to each other in the comments section of the blog. I quickly browsed through all the comments to his posts and noticed that each of his posts easily rakes in a thousand comments. Most of them even break the two-thousand mark. It's amazing. He also wrote about two movies that he is working on right now. One, called Fast Track, is about a slacker played by Zach, who is forced to work for his father-in-law after his pregnant wife steps away from her high-paying job. The other movie, called The Last Kiss, says that it's about a domesticated couple whose futures are threatened by anxiety. Both those movies sound amazing. To get me to see a movie like that you wouldn't even need to tell me what it's about, just tell me that Zach Braff is the star. Zach Braff, you're a star.

Crystal Skulls played at Ray's Golden Lion last Thursday night with Mu Meson and, if no one in the room had eyes or noses, I would have peed my pants I was so excited to be there. Now I haven't always been a fan of Crystal Skulls. I was first introduced to them by Adam during one of our cool podcasts. They were unlike anything that I have ever heard before. Adam has described them as tight, clean, rock with a bit by Jazz. I really can't even begin to describe them. At first I didn't really care much about them. It wasn't until a few days later when Adam gave me a DVD full of music that I really started to notice how awesome they were. Once listening through their album on the DVD that Adam made for me I was in love. Just having their album was enough to satisfy my love for them. Even though I hadn't paid for it or supported the band in any way at all, it was still an honor and privilege to possess their album. Luckily, The winds-of-supporting-the-band soon blew my way. I received a myspace message from the Mu Meson group, a local pop/ambient/experimental band that has a good following around here, telling me that they had an upcoming show in town with Crystal Skulls! I was totally excited. I still have no idea how I even gotten on their mailing list, but it's the best thing that I have never done. I went and told anyone who had ever listened to any music that they should come to the show with me. After about a week, I got three people to come with me, Adam, Brandon and Chad. The message that I got from the Mu Meson mailing list said the show started at nine, but it was wrong and we all waited around for an hour until the show really started at ten. We met up with Raven there and then hung around the foose-ball table talking because we didn't have enough quarters to actually get a game started. Janelle and Brad showed up later and they joined our group. We had a mighty fine group. Mu Meson took the stage a little after ten. They played a few cool songs and were good but their sound mix was so horrible that I couldn't appreciate them at all. There was a point in their show that the man running the sound board actually got up and left the console to stand at the front of the stage and take pictures. During one of the many songs the he was taking pictures off, one of the guys in the band whipped out some sort of woodwind instrument (the name escapes me now) and tried to play a solo into the mic. Too bad the guy was taking pictures of the solo instead of going back to the console and turning up the mic that he was playing into so that everyone could hear him. Everyone cheered and they got off the stage to make room for the real heroes of the night. The sound man returned to the console with his camera and played some crappy music.

Here's Crystal Skulls looking totally hatt.
Crystal Skulls took the stage and we're totally awesome! I saw them run through a bit of a sound check and appreciated the fact that they made the sound guy actually mix them and make them sound good. After the sound man did his job, he looked bitter. They jumped right into the first song off their album, "Airport Motels," and rocked out! The coolest thing about them was that they sounded just like they did on the album. Their rhythm was tight, their vocals were crisp and they were just downright hatt. Everyone in the band looked like they were having a great time, especially the drummer. He would rock back and forth on his throne, shake his head around, flail his arms and let his tongue dangle out of his mouth without a care in the world. Someone later pointed out that the drummer had a pair of headphones on connected to an iPod. Before starting up different songs, he would take a second to dial up something on his iPod. I talked to him after the show and found out that the iPod had some percussion beats on it that he used to keep everything in their performance sounding tight. I bought their album and he signed it! I think we're friends now, but he lives in Seattle, I don't know his name and he might have been mocking me when he signed the album. BFF!

The cool dressed-up guy behind the guitarist.
The singer was friendly and engaging, the bassist moved a lot and the guitarist grooved. They were all awesome together. One guy in the front row of the audience was totally decked out in 80's or 90's clothes (who really cares between the two?) and was totally loved by the singer. The whole show the singer beckoned the guy to come up on stage and dance around. He finally came up on the last song and the crowd went crazy. He ran around the stage doing all sorts of crazy stuff. He would do this finger thing where he would point repeatedly at someone doing an awesome solo as if he was directing a plane landing right on top of them and he got behind the guitarist and pretended to play his guitar with him. He was silly. After their last song everyone was totally disappointed and cheered for an encore. I had never seen an audience so pumped for a band before. We all must have cheered for them to come back for a full minute before the singer finally came back. He brought the drummer back with him and got us all clapping our hands to help get the beat down. He sang a few verses of a song I didn't know, thanked us for all our support and encouraged us to come to their next show coming up at 321 in September sometime.

That's me completely enjoying the show. You can still see the blood in my eyes and my poofey lip from the day on the river.
Basically, they were awesome. They were so awesome that I even changed the background of the site to their album art! Once I find out when they are coming back in town I'll write it here on the site and we can all go as a great big family, a great big family of people that think I'm hilarious. You do, don't you? Until then, check out their site.

Crystal Skulls

|W|P|112430361691506847|W|P|Crystal Skulls|W|P|stevegeluso@gmail.com8/13/2005 09:43:00 PM|W|P|Steve Geluso|W|P|These past few days have not faired well for my face. Brandon, Crawford, Tyler and I have taken to chilling down the river in our inflatable rafts and kayaks a lot this week. Pretty much whenever Brandon wasn't working or anyone else had somewhere to be, we would be out on the river slowly floating downstream. There's really not much to it. We just pack up the raft and kayaks, stop at Alby's or Fred Meyer to get some snacks to keep us busy on the river and then set off on the water.

The Mega-Chill.
The first day that we rafted down the river was pretty uneventful. We only took out my raft and Tyler's small inflatable batmobile to hold the cooler. The batmobile wasn't our first choice to hold the cooler. Tyler had found a sweet floating cooler called the "mega-chill" that suited our needs perfectly. It had a hole in the center of it that could be filled up with ice and pop, along with some handy cup holders built into the outside ring. Basically, it was perfect. Our plan was to tie it to the back of the raft dragging it along out of the way and only pulling it near when the need be. When we had it all packed up to the brim with ice and pop I decided that we should squeeze in some otter pops. The first thing that Tyler and Brandon said to me was "Don't pop the mega-chill." The first thing that I did was shove in some otter pops and popped the mega-chill. So we threw the cooler in the batmobile and towed it behind us. Not long after we launched the raft into the river, Derek and Sam attacked us from the dock and tried to take out the batmobile! They splashed us a bunch too. During the float down to the Marina, Tyler saw tons of gold at the bottom of the river and got super excited. It turned out that the gold he saw was just the sun reflecting off the water and, once we figured out was he was talking about, looked nothing like gold under water at all. Brandon and I took my truck to his house with my raft tied securely in the back and the windows rolled down to make up for the broken air conditioning. Conversation had been quiet for a few minutes as we were driving down Keene. Then, all of a sudden, this giant killer wasp just got sucked into my window and landed on my eye. The silence was broken by me twitching in my seat, totally freaking out trying to get the wasp out of my eye. It stung and bit a few times before I was able to swat if off my face towards Brandon's feet. All this time he had just looked at me kind of weird because the wasp came in and landed on my face just as another truck was passing us. He thought that I was getting mad because that guy was passing us. We finally got to Brandon's and had a killer BBQ. Just for the record, Crawford wussed out and couldn't even finish his second burger. There's been no word on whether that unfinished burger is still haunting his dreams. The next time we went out on the two kayaks. We found a great place to hang out at the end of a sand bar in the middle of the river where there were no rocks, the water was warm and stayed shallow for a long way. It's now our secret Ultimate Frisbee paradise. Crawford and I were walking around it when we just fell into this huge trench. The trench was like an infinitely deep cut right in the middle of the river without any slope leading into it at all. The funny thing was that even though it was so big, once we got out, we never found it again. After chilling at the U Fris paradise for a while we took off in the kayaks for the dock we were ending the trip at. The ride to the dock was pretty eventful all in itself. There were white caps on the choppy water and water was spraying up over the side of the kayaks filling them up. I forgot to mention that the kayak that Brandon and Tyler were sharing had a leak in it and they kept having to pump it up. It wasn't dangerous at all, it was just all really cool. I also forgot to mention that we had tied the two kayaks together, side by side, just so we would all stick together. By now we didn't have much time to get to the dock because cross country practice was just around the corner, the corner of time. Funny thing is, clocks never have corners. Anyways, we decided to untie the kayaks and have a bit of a race. Crawford and I were on the winning team and Brandon and Tyler were on the losing team. About halfway to the dock, a boat full of guys just a bit older than us threw a rope to Brandon and Tyler and gave them rides into the dock. None of their rides lasted too long because it was really hard to hang on to the rope and stay in the kayak at the same time. Crawford threw his paddle at them as a harpoon when they passed us but he missed. Brandon and Tyler were dropped off at the dock and then the guys in the boat turned around and picked up Crawford and I. Crawford was a lot better than me at holding on to the rope from the boat and staying in the kayak but he still didn't last too long. The guys in the boat swung back around, tossed me the rope and told me to not let go for anything. I was pulled out of the kayak real quick but I didn't let go! I held on to the rope just being dragged in the water for a while until the guys in the boat laughed and told me that I could let go now. We were pulled the rest of the way to the dock where Brandon and Tyler were waiting and called it a day. Chad and Johnny Mac joined Brandon, Crawford, Tyler and I for out last day out on the river. We brought my big raft and two of the inflatable kayaks. This time we had two full cases of pop and a ton of candy filling the cooler and pouring out into the back half of the raft to keep us happy for the day. Brandon and I dropped the raft off the dock with all of the food in it where the current quickly drug it away. I jumped into the raft to try to keep control of it and keep it near the dock but it was just too much for me. Everyone else loaded up in the kayaks and Brandon swam over to join me in the raft. As soon as we took off I cracked open the cooler and tossed Mountain Dews out to everyone that wanted them. I overthrew a dewski to the kayak that Chad and Crawford were sharing and it sunk to the bottom of the river. I dived out and tried to find it but didn't have any luck. Tyler and Johnny Mac spent a lot of their time cruising upstream around the spot where the dewski sank and, much to everyone's surprise, they eventually found it. Tyler probably drank it. Our secret U-Fris spot was waited patiently for us until we got there. Once there we cracked open a few more deskis and threw the frisbee around. No one could find the super deep trench again. After throwing the frisbee around a lot and sitting on the bank of the secret U-Fris spot, eating and talking Crawford needed to take off to drop his car off at a shop somewhere to be worked on. He and I took a kayak up the river to where our cars were parked while everyone else chilled behind. The current was really strong going upstream to the cars and made it hard for us to paddle straight. Eventually, we decided to get out where the water was shallow and push the kayak in the water while walking. I swung my legs over the side of the kayak and then slowly slid head-first into the water. About half-way through my entrance into the water, I completely stopped. I came up from under the water all confused and wondering what was going on. My face really hurt and for some reason, they was blood dripping from it. I held my face with my hands and spat out blood while I tried to piece together what had just happened. I was in the kayak. We were in shallow water. I got out of the kayak. I dived into the bottom of the rocky river face-first. Now my face was bleeding and I felt like I had just stepped out of Fight Club. I stood there for a while just kind of drooling spit and blood all down my chin and across my chest while Johnny Mac and Tyler paddled up alongside us. I smiled widely at them until they saw the blood and then they tried to figure out what went on. I filled them in quickly while they just stared at my mouth and asked if there was a rock stuck in it. Apparently, my lip had swollen to enormous proportions where it had been cut. Crawford looked at my face and the blood hungrily and so I thought it best to keep going. We got the kayak to his car soon enough and he took off to take care of his business. I went to the bathroom and checked myself out in the reflection of the hand dryer. I was relieved to see that nothing was too bad and I was still a handsome devil. I did a better cleaning job once I got home by filling a bucket with hydrogen peroxide and completely dousing my head in it. The burning sensation practically tore my face off. It was all I could do to keep from standing straight up, raising my arms and pulling a Darth Vader, "Padme? NOOOOO!!" Sports registration for cross country was that night. Everyone there saw my still bleeding face and literally every person that mentioned something about it also said something along the lines of "so did you do that trying to pull off some totally awesome new scooter trick?" I hadn't realized how many people had seen the scooter movie, apparently it's really gotten around. On Friday there was a concert for an older 70's band called Firefall. The Firefall show was warmed up by a local group called Colorblind. Not only were they colorblind, they were tone deaf. They weren't really tone deaf, they just butchered a lot of the songs they were covering. I wont deny that they got a great crowd reaction though. People were cheering and moving to their music and I guess that's all that matters. All the Firefall guys were great. There show wasn't totally planned out. They had an idea of the songs that they wanted to play and they went through them, but sometimes in the middle of a song they would just groove. One guy was real mean on the flute and another could hold his own on the guitar. There were a few times during their show that the flute guy and the guitar guy would get into battles and play completely unbelievable solos back and forth. It was really cool. The concert was at the Clover Island Inn parking lot and started at 7:00. We arrived with the truck at 12:00 and had all the equipment set up by 2:00. The two bands came in for sound checks and we were done with everything at about 4:00. Everyone working at the sound company follows the philosophy that there are two ways to get the job done; either getting your stuff together and having lots of time to sit and do nothing or scramble and work hard to get anything done. Everyone likes the first option. During the down time, I was sitting in a chair waiting for something to happen sipping water from lunch at Taco Johns (where they make a real mean churro). Nothing was happening for a while so I started playing with my straw. I held the straw up to my eye and pulled it with my right hand while I squeezed my thumb and pointer finger of my left hand together watching all the water come out the other end of the straw. It felt like I was getting something done and I was satisfied. I couldn't tell when my left hand would run out of straw to squeeze so I just kept pulling with my right hand. All in one instant, my left hand ran out of straw to pull which took away any tension my right hand was pulling against and sent the straw stabbing right into my eye. I am an idiot. After the concert, we packed everything into the truck, took it to the shop and put it all away in the shop. I ducked under a shelf holding some stage roof truss to put away a light tower. When I came out from under the shelf I stood up too soon and hit my head on the truss. It hurt. I felt like an idiot again. My eye got stung my a wasp while driving, I dived into rocks face-first at the bottom of the river, I stabbed myself in the eye with a straw and hit my head on some hard, metal truss. I say that my mind was just somewhere else this week. If I ever get my mind back I'll have to hold on to it tight myself because there's really not much left of my head to keep it inside itself.|W|P|112399993299234088|W|P|My Broken Face|W|P|stevegeluso@gmail.com8/12/2005 02:54:00 AM|W|P|Steve Geluso|W|P|"I wouldn't say that any feelings or thoughts are pathetic... just because that's a really neat thing to say." Clor's self-titled album.
I am usually excited when I stumble across some sort of new Indie band album. It's always great to hear something a bit different and I can respect someone that goes out and does what they want instead of what the music industry tells them to and will get them a lot of money. Having said that, it shouldn't be a surprise to hear that I was way excited to listen to a new album that I found yesterday by a group called "Clor." In fact, I was so way excited about them that I was talking to Megan and just about told her all about them. Then I realized that I hadn't actually listened to them yet. I quickly searched through iTunes and queued their album up. The first track started off a bit weak. There were some guitars, a pretty dominant synthesized drum beat and some plain saltine vocals. I waited for the track to build up and explode into something awesome... but it never did. The coolest part of the track ended up being when some maracas came in. I listened to a few more tracks, trying to find something that I could share with Megan, but found nothing. Eventually, I picked three songs that I thought included a decent variety of all that Clor did on the album. She listened to one song and was not impressed. I think that we both decided that they weren't bad, they just weren't spectacular in any respect at all. And so I learned a lesson that night; some indie bands are just independent for a reason. If you really want to hear Clor check out this super ok song.

The air was thick, the skies were clear and the sun just beat down on everything. Whenever I stepped outside it felt like I was getting a big hug from the warm heavy air. It's perfect story telling weather. Tyler and I got up early on the first morning of leadership camp to go for a run together. We signed out of camp at about 6:30 and found a nice trail in the forest running along side a small creek. There was some beautiful scenery all along the creek and I really wish that I had my camera. I especially wish that I had my camera for what we would see later in our run. The trail that we were running along got steeper and steeper until it was more of a switchback hiking trail than a running trail. At a fork in the trail deep in the forest there was a sign that said "Angel Falls - 3/4 mile." We decided to keep running on the steep switchback trail and go see the waterfall.

A picture of the small waterfall
from underneath.
As we ran up the trail to the waterfall the creek got bigger and rapids and miniature waterfalls started showing up in the creek. About a half mile away from Angel Falls the trail ran under another smaller waterfall. Tyler and I stopped running there for a minute and just enjoyed the coolness of standing under a waterfall. It was too bad that I didn't have my camera on me during our run, I missed out on a lot of totally awesome pictures. A few days later in camp my camp council went for a hike to the same small waterfall. Some of us had brought swimming suits and had a great time getting soaked under the falls. This time I was lucky enough to have my camera with me and grabbed a few pictures. Continuing on with our run, Tyler and I headed up some more intense switchback trails all the way to the huge waterfall.

Here's a cool picture of Tyler under the waterfall that we almost died taken while his group was visiting the waterfall.
The creek ran through a small canyon in the forest along the trail where the creek broke into many more rapids and tiny waterfalls. We eventually got to the real big waterfall and we're blown away. One side of mountain, covered in the pine trees, was cut out and exposed a smooth face of moss covered, smooth, brown rock. At least 100 feet up, at the very top of the waterfall, two separate streams of water fell over the edge and spread out in the air until they came crashing together at a pool at the bottom spraying mist all over the place. The water was quickly fed out of the pool downhill into the creek and back towards the camp. I'll definitely have to go back there and grab some pictures. After admiring the waterfall, Tyler and I didn't have much time left to get back to the camp and needed a shortcut. We crossed the creek under the waterfall and followed a trail further into the woods. The trail didn't seem to be going anywhere near the right direction of camp so we turned around and decided that it would be a better idea to take a shortcut walking right alongside the creek until we found the trail again. This was a great idea, until we almost died. There was enough room on either side of the water in the creek within the canyon for both Tyler and I to walk down searching for the trail back to camp. We scaled down the sides of rapids and shimmied down logs bypassing waterfalls. Our trek through the woods was going perfectly well until we reached a particularly treacherous section of the creek. This one part of the creek was about a 30 foot long, 45 degree , rocky water-slide. The rocks on either side of the creek were steep and covered with slippery moss and surrounded by the steepest of the canyon walls yet. I headed down one side of the creek first with Tyler close behind me. No more than five feet down the side, I lost my grip and fell into the ouchy water-slide of rock. The current and gravity of the slope swept me down the slide scraping me up on the way. About half way down I hit a branch which slowed my fall a lot. It broke and I continued all the way down to the bottom of the slide. Tyler took his time coming down and made it safely.

This almost happened.
After checking myself out to make sure that I was alive I went ahead of Tyler around a blind corner in the canyon and saw the most amazing thing ever. We had unknowingly followed the creek so far down that we had ended up right at the top of the first small waterfall! We could look over the edge and see the rope marking the path under the falls. The scariest feeling was realizing that if that current had been just that much stronger I would have been swept around that blind corner and right off the smaller waterfall to my death. I stood, peering over the waterfall, wishing that I had my camera again for a minute before deciding to continue on. I didn't want to give up trying to find the trail after having come this far so I looked at the steep wall of the canyon at the edge of the waterfall and sized it up. "It looks kinda risky." I said to Tyler, motioning to the steep wall and the long fall to certain death. Right after saying that I just got close to the wall and started to scale it. Luckily, Tyler had enough common sense to just say "Ummmm.. no." and we headed back up the creek to the big waterfall. We got back on the long, but correct, trail to camp and booked it quickly back to camp for breakfast. By the time that we got back to camp, there was barely five minutes to spare for us to get changed and to a breakfast table without raising any suspicion about where we had been. We did it. As I'm sure everyone has noticed, the site is a bit unfinished right now. You're sure to find broken links all over that will lead you nowhere. All the sloppiness is due to changing over to the new site design and I'll get things straightened out as soon as I can. With this newest site design I am declaring the forum ready and open for business again. Go in there, start some topics, make some new friends and I'll do my best not to let it die like it did last time I tried it out. Before I run off to get some other super important stuff done I've got to shout out to any members from the Klassy Council K and all you Daks out there. Each and every one of you are awesome and I'd like to wish you luck in your coming school year. To everyone else, enjoy your visits here and keep it klassy.
